BBQ Charcoal Grill

A BBQ Charcoal Grill uses two different cooking methods: indirect and direct heat. In direct heat cooking, food is placed on the grill over the hot charcoal. Indirect heat is used for more delicate foods by placing the charcoal on one side of the grill and the food on the other. This is used for longer cooking times and for larger cuts of meat. Learning the temperature of the coals is the only trick in direct grilling. A gas grill has heat setting that allows you to control the temperature. But charcoal grilling is all about the coals. The ceramic coals should be ready when 3/4 of them are coated with ash. On a charcoal grill, you can check the temperature by holding your hand, palm down, over the coals at the cooking height and count the number of seconds you can hold your hand there before you have to pull it away.

•    Low = 5 seconds
•    Medium= 4 seconds
•    Medium-High Heat= 3 seconds
•    High= 2 seconds

Indirect Cooking on A BBQ Charcoal Grill

For indirect cooking on a charcoal grill, place several briquettes on each side of the grill pan, leaving an empty space in the center. Light the briquettes. When you’re ready to cook, place a drip pan between the coals and add water to the pan to a level of 1/2″. Place the food over the drip pan and cover the grill. Every 45 minutes you will need to add 5-6 briquettes to maintain even heat.

For indirect cooking on a dual burner gas grill, set the drip pan on the lava rocks on one side of the grill and add water to 1/2″. Preheat the other burner on high for 5-10 minutes. Turn the temperature down to medium, and then put the food on the rack over the drip pan and cover.

Your main cooking range is now a built-in grill with side burners. So you have this marvelous area on the grill top to cook your ribs or steaks plus your vegetables as well. Grilling has become quite an art in cooking and many men love to show off their creative side with the flourishes that are normally found in the great chefs of the world. BBQ has become a standard fare for the weekend warrior group as well as the ladies around the pool! Kids and adults alike still love hamburgers and even hot dogs; Polish sausages always taste better when cooked on a grill.

Build-in outdoor cabinets can hide all of the pluming of the utilities out of site in the outdoor kitchen just like in the inside kitchen. Add a refrigerator that is built to be outside, an ice machine and some specialty ovens and your have yourself a perfect outdoor kitchen.

Family time is very important; perhaps even more so these days, so remember to have family gatherings as well as parties for the people with whom you socialize. The nice thing about having an outdoor kitchen is that it is always ready to host a party. Whether it is a small intimate group or the whole gang, enjoy the screened eating area at any time.

It seems that picnics, food and outdoor eating can call flies from miles around, but that doesn\’t have to be a problem. The solution may be as simple as screening off the area where you eat. Make the area large enough for tables and chairs plus room to move around. Also, since most summers are fairly warm, you might want to consider doing some of your baking outside. Historians have told us that for many years, people had an outdoor kitchen to keep from adding heat to their main house. Just think what fun it would be to tantalize all who live around you with the aromas of freshly baked goods coming from your outdoor kitchen!

The thing about cooking outdoors is that it is addictive and you may want to do it all year long. By building the grill in and using gas, you can have a set up that is usable most of the time. Gas grilling can be done at the turn of a knob, you don\’t have to build a fire and then wait for the coals to get \”just right\”. Portable heaters can keep the chill off during the winter months and with a roof over your head, there are no worries about snow or rain. After all, kabobs with pineapple or steaks that have been grilled in November taste even better than when they are grilled in July.

Having company and being able to enjoy them as you are cooking in your outdoor kitchen just completes what you wanted from this newly created space.
