I recently received an email in which the writer asked “how is the Nutrisystem food right out of the box? Does it taste decent or do you have to add things to it to make it edible?” I will answer this question in the following article.

Adding Things To The Nutrisystem Food: Actually I sort of suspected that the writer may be confusing the healthy fresh additions that you’re asked to include with every meal. This isn’t to make the food tastes better. It’s because they want you to have regular fresh foods in addition to the prepackaged meals. This really isn’t a big deal. They’re pretty much just asking you to add some strawberries to your cereal or a salad to your lasagna as examples.

The Nutrisystem Breakfasts Are Excellent Right Out Of The Package: I honestly think that the breakfasts are where this diet shines. Most of the breakfast options require very little preparation and are pretty good just the way they are. You can basically take the muffins, scones, and cinnamon rolls right out of the package. You can just add milk to the cereal. I really don’t doctor up any of the breakfast choices. They are quite good as is. This is also true of most of the desserts and snacks.

Some Of The Nutrisystem Foods Can Benefit From Some Enhancement: There are some of the lunch and dinner entrees that I like to add things to in order to enhance the taste. For example, I add fat free sour cream to nearly all of the soups and stews. I add just a touch of fat free cheese to the top of the ravioli. And I add hot sauce to the barbque wraps and the Chinese selections like the pepper steak. In short, I’m never shy about adding a little flavor enhancement as long as it is low sugar, low fat, low calorie, and low carb.

Not all of the foods require this. Nothing on the menu is horrible, but I don’t see the point in not making everything as good as it can be. This hasn’t seemed to slow my progress. If it did, I might cut back on this, but so far, I haven’t seen the need to.

The Best Food Straight Out Of The Box Is The Nutrisystem Select Line: This diet does have a line of “gourmet” or “fresh frozen” meals called select. If you look at the individual price list, you’ll see that these selections are the most expensive. But many people will tell you that the extra price is worth it. (If you buy the select line as part of a package, it only cost slightly more than the regular package.)

The select line has a much broader selection of foods, but the foods themselves taste a bit better also. They are said to be restaurant quality. Whether this is true or not, they are the best tasting foods and I find them to be quite good. There’s choices like steak and portobello mushrooms, shrimp Alfredo, Philly cheese steak, grilled ham and cheese, and apple crisp. These are only a few of the examples. The menu on this one is quite large.

For the most part, I think that most of the Nutrisystem foods are edible out of the box, but I don’t see any harm in making whatever “safe” changes that you find desirable.
